So LG has recently shown off this 5-inch screen with 1080p resolution.
LG introduces 5 inch 1080p display
I mean the idea seems impressive and all, and 440 ppi is nothing to scoff at. I just feel like it is a bit too much. Pixels are already nearly unnoticeable in a 720p screen; even those close to 5 inches. I don't think we would really be able to see a huge difference.
Plus, a 1080p will take a hit in performance and energy. We will have to see about that, but I jsut wanted to see how you guys feel about this.

Is 1080p on a 5-inch screen an overkill?

I really do think it is necessary. It looks great in a spec sheet, but I doubt the naked eye can notice much difference. Apple's Retina Display has a 326 ppi resolution and "one can't see the pixels no matter how close one gets." I mean 440 ppi? A bit too much. And like you mentioned, it will definitely take its toll on performance and battery life.

It will definitely be a good marketing/advertising stunt, though. A 1080p DISPLAY IN A 5 INCH SCREEN! But for some reason no matter how good an LG phone gets, no one is really jumping over it. lol. The LG Optimus LTE is such a capable device, for example, but people are just not getting excited over it.
